Natural Family Photography in Melbourne

MEET RJ

We know family photographs are important — but we also know you don't want to spend your session arranging everyone into position and asking the kids to smile.

Our approach is calm, unobtrusive and natural. We'll gently guide you when needed, but most of the time, we'll let you be yourselves — playing, cuddling, laughing, exploring and simply enjoying being together.

They're the little moments in between — the way your children hold your hand, the laughter you didn't expect, the cheeky expressions, the cuddles and all the beautiful, fleeting pieces of family life that you'll want to remember.

Family photography across Melbourne

We photograph families throughout Melbourne, including Bayside, Mentone, Highett, Cheltenham, Brighton, Hampton, Sandringham, Beaumaris, Mornington and surrounding suburbs.

Honest, relaxed photography for families who want to remember this stage of life exactly as it felt.

Family photography that lets you be yourselves

Family life doesn't always look perfectly posed — and that's exactly what makes it beautiful.

We photograph families in a relaxed, natural way, focusing on genuine connection rather than asking everyone to constantly look at the camera. There might be a little running around, plenty of laughter, cuddles, curious little faces and moments you didn't even realise were happening.

Our goal is simple: to create photographs that feel like your family, not a photoshoot.

No awkward poses. No pressure to perform.

You don't need to know how to pose.

You don't need perfectly behaved children.

And you certainly don't need to spend the session saying, “Smile!”

Family Photography Melbourne — Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you photograph family sessions in Melbourne?

We photograph families throughout Melbourne, from beautiful beaches and parks to gardens, urban locations and the comfort of your own home. We regularly work across Melbourne’s Bayside suburbs, including Mentone, Highett, Cheltenham, Brighton, Hampton, Sandringham and Beaumaris, as well as other locations around Melbourne.

If you have a favourite place that means something to your family, we'd love to hear about it. Sometimes the most meaningful location is simply somewhere your family already loves spending time together.

Can we have our family photography session at home?

Absolutely. In-home family photography can be incredibly personal and relaxed, particularly with younger children.

Home is where your family naturally feels comfortable, and that often allows us to capture genuine moments without the pressure of going somewhere unfamiliar. We can photograph everyday interactions, cuddles, playtime, reading, getting ready or simply being together.

The goal isn't to make your home look perfect — it's to document your family as you are.

Do you photograph children and babies?

Yes. We photograph babies, toddlers, young children and families with children of all ages.

With little ones, we don't expect them to sit still or smile on command. We allow them to explore, play and be themselves, while we look for those fleeting expressions, interactions and little personalities that you'll want to remember.

Do you photograph extended families?

Yes. Extended family sessions are a wonderful way to bring grandparents, siblings, cousins and multiple generations together.

We can photograph the whole family together as well as smaller combinations — grandparents with the grandchildren, siblings, individual families and all the little interactions in between.

With larger groups, we'll provide gentle direction when needed while still keeping the photographs natural and relaxed.

Do you offer birthday photography?

Yes. We photograph children's birthdays and family celebrations, from intimate first birthdays at home to larger birthday parties.

Rather than photographing only the formal moments, we focus on telling the story of the celebration — the excitement before the cake, little details, family and friends arriving, laughter, hugs, games, candles, cake and all the wonderfully unpredictable moments that happen throughout the day.

Can you recommend locations for our family session?

Absolutely. If you don't already have somewhere in mind, we can suggest locations based on your family, the ages of your children and the kind of photographs you're hoping for.

Melbourne has some beautiful options, from beaches and coastal locations to parks, gardens and more urban settings. We can also consider the best time of day for the location and the kind of natural light we're looking for.

If you have a favourite beach, park or place that has meaning to your family, that's often an even better starting point.

What happens if my children don't want to cooperate?

That's completely okay — and honestly, it's part of photographing children.

There is no expectation that your children will behave perfectly, sit still or smile whenever we ask. We don't want the session to feel like a performance.

Instead, we'll give them space to be themselves and use gentle direction, games, movement and interaction where appropriate. Sometimes the photographs we love most come from the moments that weren't planned at all.

Our job is to work with your family as you are, not to force everyone into a particular pose.

How long does a family photography session take?

Most family sessions are relaxed and give us enough time to settle in, explore the location and let things unfold naturally.

The exact length depends on the type of session, the number of people involved and whether we're photographing a particular milestone or celebration.

We'll discuss what you're looking for before your session and recommend the amount of time that will work best for your family.

What should we wear for our family photos?

We generally recommend choosing clothes that make you feel comfortable and like yourselves rather than dressing everyone in matching outfits.

Soft, natural and complementary colours tend to photograph beautifully. Neutral tones, earthy colours and simple textures can help keep the focus on your family rather than the clothing.

Most importantly, choose something you can move, play and relax in — especially when little ones are involved.

If you're unsure, we're always happy to offer some simple guidance before your session.

A man lifting a young boy into the air on a beach, both smiling and playing. The ocean and a clear blue sky are visible in the background.

They won't be this little forever.

One day you'll look back and realise how quickly this chapter passed.

The missing front teeth. The messy hair. The tiny hands. The way they used to run into your arms.

Let's photograph it while it's here.
