A Beautiful Family Portrait Session at Brighton Beach, Melbourne

Seven Years Later: A Beautiful Family Portrait Session at Brighton Beach, Melbourne

There are some family photography sessions that feel like so much more than a photo shoot.

My time with Yan, her husband, their beautiful children Jo Jo and Kai, and their grandparents at Brighton Beach in Melbourne was one of those sessions.

It was a beautiful sunny Melbourne day, but what made this family portrait session so special was the way everyone simply embraced the moment. There was no pressure to pose or perform. They were completely carefree, wonderfully present and, most importantly, completely themselves.

And that is exactly what I love about family photography.

Seven years later, back where it all began

Seven years earlier, Yan and her husband had visited this very same spot at Brighton Beach.

Back then, they were a couple without children, simply enjoying their time together in Melbourne.

Seven years later, they returned to the same place — this time as a family of four, with Jo Jo and Kai — and with their grandparents joining them to share the experience.

There was something incredibly beautiful about witnessing that full-circle moment.

The same beach.
The same beautiful Melbourne coastline.
A completely different chapter of their lives.

Capturing the moments in between

Rather than creating a series of perfectly posed portraits, I wanted to document the little things that made their family connection so genuine — the laughter, the cuddles, the children running around, the grandparents enjoying their grandchildren and all those fleeting moments that happen naturally when a family is simply together.

For me, those are the photographs that become truly meaningful over time.

Family photography isn't just about how everyone looks in a photograph. It is about remembering how it felt to be together.

Yan and her family made my job incredibly easy. They were relaxed, joyful and completely present, allowing me to photograph their personalities and connections as they naturally unfolded.

A Melbourne family story to remember

It was an absolute honour — and genuinely a gift — to document such a heartfelt part of their travels back to Melbourne after seven years.

To photograph them in the same place where their story had once been captured as a couple, and now to see them there as a family of four, was incredibly special.

These are the stories I feel privileged to photograph.

The photographs will preserve more than just a beautiful day at Brighton Beach. They will hold a little piece of their journey — from two people exploring Melbourne together seven years ago, to a family returning with their children and grandparents, creating new memories in a place that already meant something to them.

Beautiful, honest, carefree and completely them.

That is what family photography is all about.
